Urmston Explorer Scouts go for their ‘try dive’ badge Posted Monday, March 9, 2009 by The Committee | Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit from Urmston took part in a try dive with the Trafford Sub Aqua Club at Urmston Leisure Centre on March 4th, in a departure from their usual skills development.
The group of 13 explorers aged between 14 and 18 years old have never experienced scuba diving before.
Explorer Scout Leader (ESL) Judy Walton-Kelly comments, “The group are really excited and can’t wait to see what it will feel like to breathe under water. I’m really grateful to the Trafford Sub Aqua Club for helping to arrange this event. Scouting is very important to our local community and the kids appreciate the opportunity they have been given.
Chairman of TSAC, Dale Makin comments, “There isn’t actually a diving badge to be won, but we’ve created one for the night as inviting Phoenix Explorer Scouts to come diving with us gives us the chance to give something to the local community. Obviously diving is something the club is passionate about, but it isn’t just great fun, diving also builds confidence and provides a sense of accomplishment. We feel the Explorers will get a lot out of it and may hopefully join the club when they are older.
ESL Judy adds, “At Explorers we believe young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,' when they are given responsibility and take acceptable risks and think for themselves. I think scuba diving fulfils all of these objectives.”
